District Executive, Community and Program Leadership position available with Northern Star Scouting. You will train and guide adults to support Scouting units with their program and administration as the team's point person in western Minnesota including Willmar, Montevideo, Hutchinson, Litchfield, and surrounding communities. The executive will work out of a home office though much of the workday will be spent outside the office in meetings with volunteers. Travel to the Twin Cities for meetings is necessary at least once a week.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Achieve goals related to growing Scouting in the local communities.
  • Recruit volunteer leadership for unit needs and maintain strong relationships
  • Provide support to units through membership recruitment, program development and activities
  • Communicate and form partnerships with religious, civic, fraternal, educational, and other community-based organizations with regards to Scouting.
  • Provide quality service through timely communication, regular meetings, events and activities

Essential skills

  • Ability to build and empower a team, establish relationships, and utilize salesmanship
  • Must be a team player, problem-solver and troubleshooter
  • Must possess effective organizational and communication skills
  • Must have time and project management skills, with ability to troubleshoot
  • Must be comfortable with public speaking, and able to work effectively with diverse audiences


  • Must live in the territory, preferably between the Willmar and Hutchinson communities
  • Education: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university or equivalent
  • Must be age 21 or older unless prohibited by any applicable law
  • Past experience in Boy or Girl Scouting or other youth organization is helpful, though not required
  • Proficiency in a language other than English (specifically Spanish or Somali) would be helpful, though not required; applicants with a diverse background are encouraged to apply

The annual salary is $40,000 for this District Executive position. Benefits include major medical, dental, vision, life-insurance, short- and long-term disability, and retirement plan. The organization offers paid time off (equivalent of 16 days annually for new hires) and 11 annual holidays.

The position requires you to work varied hours when necessary. Some breakfast and evening meetings, and weekend activities are required to achieve objectives.  Some weeks may require over 40 hours. This position requires flexibility and in turn, your work schedule is flexible. 

Frequent travel within the assigned territory is required using one's own personal vehicle. Reimbursement is provided for business miles. Must be able to maintain valid driver's license, reliable transportation, and motor vehicle insurance at minimum levels of $100K/$300K/$100K.
