DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR-MAJOR GIFTS

Join Northern Star Council and make a difference in the lives of youth and families. Northern Star Scouting seeks a Development Director, Major Gifts to join our Development Team. The Director develops and executes fundraising strategies and activities to carry forward the mission and vision of Northern Star Scouting. In this ambassador role, the professional qualifies, cultivates, solicits and stewards major gifts and planned gift prospects to align supporter interests with the strategic objectives of Northern Star Scouting. 

Primary Responsibilities

  • The Director will manage a portfolio of approximately 125 prospects with a primary focus of qualifying and closing gifts of $10,000 or more.
  • Working with the Director of Development on a $20-$30 million Planned Giving campaign.
  • Work collaboratively to organize, plan and create materials for a planned giving campaign. Work with the campaign committee to effectively implement campaign strategies.
  • Actively identify and recruit new board caliber volunteers for development and advisory committees.
  • Work collaboratively with the development team to coach, train and provide skill development opportunities in major gift and planned giving efforts; and add value on team initiatives.
  • Represent Scouting within the community by attending and actively participating in appropriate external functions and events and professional organizations.
  • Write solicitation content and other donor materials as necessary. Maintain donor documentation via eTapestry.

To succeed in this job, employee must have the ability to build and empower a volunteer team; ability to build relationships and salesmanship; possess good time management and project management skills; and must be comfortable with public speaking; must enjoy building formal and informal relationship networks inside and outside the organization and working with volunteers of various backgrounds; must be able to communicate effectively with top corporate and community leaders; must have experience with proposal development and writing as well as have working knowledge of planned giving vehicles or proven ability to learn; must see ahead to future possibilities and translate them into breakthrough strategies; must be goal-oriented, self-starter, team player and problem-solver, with effective organizational and communication skills; must demonstrate a passion for youth programs; creativity and ability to prioritize multiple projects while adhering to deadlines are important attributes; must be able to work independently, be a team leader, a team player, and be dependable, accurate, and detail oriented.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree required
  • Minimum 3-5 years of building/ managing major gifts program, proven record securing and cultivating $10,000+ gifts or equivalent
  • 1-2 years of experience with planned giving processes; sales management and campaign experience is highly desirable
  • Ability to interface with Northern Star Scouting leaders, team members and board members and Scouting volunteers
  • Business/management experience, including budget, supervisory, and program development/implementation
  • Experience in Scouting or other youth organization is helpful though not required

Travel around the Twin Cities area is required using one's own vehicle; mileage reimbursement is provided for business miles. Must have driver's license, reliable transportation, and auto insurance ($100K/$300K/$100K). Must be able to work full-time days, some evenings and weekends. Offers for employment are subject to motor vehicle and criminal background checks. Must be age 21 or older unless prohibited by any applicable law.
